The Sign of the Four

    AQA
    GCSE

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are engaged by Mary Morstan to investigate the disappearance of her father and the anonymous receipt of valuable pearls. The investigation leads them to Thaddeus Sholto, who reveals the existence of the Agra Treasure, and subsequently to Pondicherry Lodge, where they find Bartholomew Sholto murdered in a locked room. Holmes utilizes his deductive powers to track the wooden-legged Jonathan Small and his accomplice Tonga through London, culminating in a dramatic boat chase on the Thames. The novel concludes with the loss of the treasure, Small's confession regarding the 'Sign of the Four' pact formed during the Indian Mutiny, and the engagement of Watson to Mary Morstan, leaving Holmes alone with his cocaine bottle.
